2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the NHS, the largest single-payer health system in the world. Now facing unprecedented challenges, the NHS is under pressure from not just an ageing population but the need to deliver ever more preventative, personalised, innovative and integrated care cost-effectively. Without doubt, the next ten years will deliver a myriad advanced therapies, from cell and gene therapies, to a revolution in AI, the utilisation of blockchain and potential for a human Internet of Things. Can the NHS afford these? What role will technology play and can it keep the NHS healthy at 70?

More about our speakers:

Tom Miller is a global healthcare industry leader and an experienced and visionary CEO.  He graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and then received a Masters degree in Medical Physics from the Harvard University/MIT Health Sciences and Technology Program.  Tom initially pursued an academic career, working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (now the Paul Scherer Institute), Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Tom then joined Siemens Medical Systems where, after 9 years, he became the first non-German CEO of a German factory and business unit. He left Siemens after 15 years to become CEO of the global medical operations of Carl Zeiss. After completing a successful turnaround, he joined Analogic Corporation as CEO. After three years and a doubling of the stock price, Tom left to help establish and become CEO of LightLab Imaging, a leader in the field of cardiovascular optical coherence tomography. Subsequently, after a profitable sale of LightLab to a Japanese company, Tom re-joined Siemens, where he became a member of the operating board and CEO of the Customer Solutions Division of Siemens Healthcare, responsible for 26,000 employees in over 130 countries.

Tom is a frequent speaker on healthcare technology and business at such venues as the National Press Club, the National Library of Medicine, the National Institute of Health, and the American Hospital Association. He was selected by the diagnostic imaging industry to provide Congressional testimony to the House Health Sub-Committee in June of 2009 and to speak on breast cancer technology at the European Parliament in 2012. Sponsored by the American Hospital Association, Tom gave the keynote speech on Sustainable Healthcare and Precision Medicine at the Health Executive Forum in Arizona in 2013; he also gave a keynote speech at the 2013 Arab Health meeting in Dubai on the same topic. In addition, Tom gave the 2013 commencement address at the India Institute of Technology in Roorkee, and keynote addresses to the Chinese Private Hospital Association in 2014 in Wuhan, the Innovation for Health Conference in 2015 in Amsterdam, the 2015 TiE Leapfrog Conference in Bangalore, and the 2016 World Executive Healthcare Forum in Montreal. Tom Serves on the Board of Atlas 5D and Chairs the Board of Ceres Nanosciences and Hummingbird Diagnostics.

Sir Muir Gray is the Director of Better Value Healthcare. He is also an adviser to Public Health England and the Chair of the NHS Health and Social Care Digital service, which is responsible for maintaining the NHS Choiceswebsite. Sir Muir’s work at Better Value Healthcare focuses on providing training to healthcare professionals on value based healthcare.

Sir Muir has worked for the National Health Service in England since 1972, occupying a variety of senior positions during that time, including serving as the Director of Research and Development for Anglia and Oxford Regional Health Authority, and first establishing and  then being the  Director of the UK National Screening Committee. He founded the National Library for Health, and was the Director of Clinical Knowledge, Process, and Safety for the NHS (England) National Programme for IT, serving as the Director of the National Knowledge Service.  He was the first person to hold the post of Chief Knowledge Officer of the NHS (England), also serving as the co-Director of the Department of Health’s Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention  (QIPP) Right Care Programme.  Together with Sir Iain Chalmers, Muir was instrumental in establishing the Cochrane Collaboration.

Sir Muir is an internationally renowned authority on healthcare systems and has advised governments of several countries outside the UK including Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and Germany and regularly delivers plenary sessions at international events, the most recent being the 2014 World Health Summit in Berlin, the Big Data in Pharma conference in London in 2015 and the 2015 Transplantation meeting at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Sir Muir is also a Professor in the Nuffield Department of Surgery at the University of Oxford.  He received the CBE in 2000 and was knighted in 2005 for services to the National Health Service.  His most recent book – SOD 70! – was published in 2015.

Dr Nadine Hachach-Haram is the co-founder of Proximie, an award-winning AR telesurgery platform that enables doctors to share expertise over distance, and at scale.
